READ ME - Using IntelliKeys with Stage Three
============================================

You can use the IntelliKeys keyboard from IntelliTools, Inc. with the Stage Three Assessment software. There are two different IntelliKeys overlays for Stage Three. The appropriate overlay will automatically be loaded, based on the input method setting you choose in Preferences.

Follow the instructions below to set up and use your IntelliKeys keyboard with Stage Three.

If you are using a USB Keyboard, make sure you have the most current version of the USB software. You can download the latest version from www.intellitools.com.

Be sure to attach the IntelliKeys before starting Stages.
Do not disconnect it until you have exited Stages.

How to use IntelliKeys with Stage Three
---------------------------------------

1. Connect IntelliKeys to your computer according to the instructions that came with it.

2. Start up your computer.

3. Put the Stages or the Stage Three CD in the CD-ROM drive.

4. If all 7 Stages are on one CD, choose Stage Three from the opening screen.

5. After starting Stage Three activities and entering the learner's name,
click the "Change Settings" button at the bottom right of the screen.

6. Choose the Input Method. With the IntelliKeys keyboard, you will select
either step scanning or auto scanning.

    To Step Scan
    ------------
If you will be using the IntelliKeys keyboard in direct
select mode (pressing the keyboard itself) or with 2
switches attached to it, choose "Step Scan" as the Input
    Method at the Preferences screen.

Then click the "IntelliKeys keyboard" or "2 switches"
button, depending on how you will be step scanning,
so that this information will be included in the
    report.

The Stages Stepscan overlay will then load automatically.

To use this overlay, press the right arrow to step forward
through all the objects on the screen, use the left arrow
to step backwards, use and the target in the center
to select the object that is highlighted on the screen.

If you are using 2 switches, use the key equivalents:
Set Switch 1 to Tab (the right arrow).
Set Switch 2 to Enter (the target).
The left arrow is equivalent to the Backspace key,
although it isn't used in 2 switch step scanning.
Pressing <Esc> on the regular keyboard stops step scanning.

It is recommended that you print a copy of the Stages
Stepscan overlay (directions below) and place it on the
    keyboard.

    To Auto Scan
    ------------
If you will be using a single switch attached to the
IntelliKeys keyboard to autoscan, choose "Auto Scan"
as the Input Method at the Preferences screen. Then
click the check box labeled: "The switch is connected
to IntelliKeys or the learner is using IntelliKeys as
    a switch".

The Stages Autoscan overlay will then load automatically.
This overlay sends a mouse-click to the activities.

Autoscanning starts automatically at Stage Three. Press
the IntelliKeys Keyboard, or a switch attached to it, to
select the object on the screen that is highlighted.

Press <Esc> on the regular keyboard to stop auto scanning.
Press the keyboard or switch to restart scanning after
you press <Esc> or it stops after completing several loops
    through all the objects.

If desired, print a copy of the Stages Autoscan overlay
(directions below) and place it on the keyboard. Note
that it is not necessary to print the overlay to use
the Stages Autoscan overlay with Stage Three.

How to print the overlay
----------------------------------
You can print from PDF files of the overlays. They are located in the Overlays: PDFs folder on your Stages CD. Double-click the file "Stages Stepscan.pdf" or "Stages Autoscan.pdf" to open it. (These files require Adobe Reader to open them. Adobe Reader is provided on this CD and is also available for free download at www.adobe.com.)

Or, you can follow these instructions to print the overlay using Overlay Printer (Mac OS 9.x) or Overlay Maker (Mac OS X).

Make sure that you print onto legal size paper (8.5" x 14") regardless of which method you use.

-- Mac OS 9.x --
Overlay Printer is included in the Overlays:Classic Tools folder on this CD.
1. Open the Overlays folder on the Stages CD.
2. Copy Overlay Printer to your computer by dragging its
icon from the Overlays folder to your Desktop.
3. Double-click the Overlay Printer icon to open the program.

-- Mac OS X --
IntelliTools recently released Overlay Maker 3, which you can use to print overlays.
1. Download the trial version of Overlay Maker 3 from the IntelliTools website.
Note: After the Overlay Maker 3 trial period expires, you will still be able
to print overlays, even though you will no longer be able to create overlays.
2. Follow the instructions provided by IntelliTools to install the
Overlay Maker 3 trial onto your computer.
3. Double-click the Overlay Maker icon to open the program.

Then use Overlay Printer (Overlay Maker in OS X) to print the overlay.
1. Start up the program by double-clicking on its icon, if you haven't already done so.
2. When prompted for a file, choose "Stages Stepscan" or "Stages Autoscan"
from the Overlays folder on the Stages CD.
3. Click "Open" to open the file.
4. Choose "Print" from the File menu.
5. To print on legal size paper, select either a legal size
paper tray, if available, or Manual Feed.
6. After printing the overlay, select "Quit" from the File menu.
7. Trim the overlay along the dotted line to fit the IntelliKeys.

An alternative way to send the overlay
----------------------------------------
If for any reason the overlay isn't sent automatically by the Stage Three software, you can use one of the following alternative methods.

For USB IntelliKeys users, use the USB IntelliKeys Control Panel:

1. Open the USB IntelliKeys Control Panel by choosing its icon on the task bar.
2. Click the Advanced tab in the USB IntelliKeys Control Panel.
3. Click the 'With this overlay:' radio button.
4. Click the Browse button to select an overlay.
5. Locate the Overlays folder on the Stages CD and select "Stages Stepscan" or "Stages Autoscan".

For Classic IntelliKeys users, use Overlay Sender:
(located in the Overlays:Classic Tools folder on this CD)

1. Open the Overlays folder on the Stages CD.
2. Double-click the Overlay Sender icon.
3. At the dialog box, locate the Overlays folder on the Stages CD and select "Stages Stepscan"
   or "Stages Autoscan".

Additional note for Macintosh users
-------------------------------------
Stages should automatically install 3 required IntelliTools files that allow Stages to run with IntelliKeys. If your IntelliKeys keyboard does not respond and the overlay is not sent, you may wish to check that the files were installed.

To check for the 3 required IntelliKeys files:

1. Navigate to this folder on your hard drive:
						 OS X computers: Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:IntelliTools
       OS 9 computers: System Folder:Application Support:IntelliTools
2. These 3 files should be present in that folder:
       Carbon Sending.shlb
       Classic Sending Helper
       Classic Sending.shlb
3. If those 3 files are not present, you can copy them from your Stages CD.
They are located in the IntelliTools folder. Select them and drag them to install them.
